Reading Notes: Adam and Eve, Part A (Reading B)
I like the interesting creation story of Adam and Eve. It starts with God declaring that He is going to make a human that resembles the image of Him.
God had good intentions for creating his creature: "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."
In addition, God bestowed the creature with food and privileges: "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat,"
One interesting thing in the plot was that God decided to rest on the Seventh day. He had been working hard for the previous 6 days, and sanctified the Seventh day for the purpose of having a rest.
God warned Eve not to eat the fruit in the midst of the garden. Despite God's warning, serpent the Snake seduces Eve and tempts her to eat the forbidden fruit. According to the genesis story of Adam and Eve, that was the beginning of sin. I like the reason why Eve was so attracted to that "special" fruit in the midst of the garden.
The story vividly describes how that specific fruit looked like to Eve: when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
It's interesting how the fruit looked so appealing to Eve that she even gave it to Adam despite being warned by God. I was also startled to find that Adam and Eve were unaware of the fact that they were naked, and it's considered free of sin.
I also like the vivid description of the place called Heaven in Biblical story: In Paradise stand the tree of life and the tree of knowledge, the latter forming a hedge about the former. Only he who has cleared a path for himself through the tree of knowledge can come close to the tree of life, which is so huge that it would take a man five hundred years to traverse a distance equal to the diameter of the trunk. It describes the Heaven as a place that is full of knowledge. I like this unique description of Heaven in Biblical mythology.
